Silver Diamine Fluoride: New Dental Caries treatment that does not require drilling

You may have recently read or heard about Silver Diamine fluoride (SDF) due to its increasing popularity in dentistry to help arrest tooth caries. SDF was cleared by the FDA in August of 2014 for use in the Unite States, and its manufacturer was granted “ breakthrough therapy status”.

Dr Anna actively researched and had training with SDF as it was being brought to market and as one of the early adopters, she has seen the benefits it has brought to her patients.

SDF works by arresting active carious lesions painlessly and without local anesthetic, preventing further spread of the cavity. It is most beneficial in young patients with early stage caries. Caries that are not very deep and not causing pain/infection/nerve issues may be treated with SDF. At least 2 applications over separate visits of SDF are necessary for it to be effective. SDF treatment can help to delay or sometimes even avoid traditional removal of caries.

Please note that not all cavities and patients are candidates for SDF and that SDF does stain the caries dark brown or even black, so cavities in the anterior ( front) of your child’s mouth could become visible and thus the esthetic outcome may not acceptable for some. Please be aware that SDF is contraindicated in patients with silver allergy.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding SDF or any other dental issues/concerns. Keep Smiling!!!
